Production of educational media key to choosing degree and forming opinion of University

Nearly two thirds (63%) of graduates* believe that if a university creates educational media as one of many teaching methods, this would strongly or slightly improve their opinion of that university. Only 4% said it would decrease their opinion of such institutions. The research** is published by The CADARN Learning Portal, which supports and stimulates the production of online and open educational resources.

CADARN Learning Portal provides support to A Level students ahead of results day

The CADARN Learning Portal is reaching out to A Level students ahead of exam results day, 13th August 2015. With a database of over 1,000 courses at five universities in Wales, potential students can browse the subjects that interest them, in the location of their choice as well as view online teaching resources to get a taste of what certain courses will involve.

Project extension for CADARN Learning Portal

The project timeline for the CADARN Learning Portal www.cadarn.ac.uk has been extended, as agreed by HEFCW and with the support of the portal’s partners, Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, Glyndŵr University, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, The Open University in Wales and Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. This will enable the CADARN team to provide continued support until December 2016 and will ensure the website is fully maintained until December 2018.

Educational Media Production Team start work

The Learning Portal project entered a new phase this month with the employment of a team of three media specialists. This team will assist partners' staff in producing educational resources for use in their teaching and to educate and inspire visitors to the portal. They will start by producing some guides to the equipment that has been funded by the project, but then will visit partners to produce materials locally, and to support and train local staff in production skills and techniques.

Learning Portal Launches Flier at HEA ‘Future Directions’ Conference

The CADARN_Learning_Portal Information Flier was launched at the HEA 'Future Directions' Conference last week, as was the new publicity stand and posters. The HEA Wales Future Directions initiative “encompasses the quality enhancement work being carried out in the Welsh HE sector, which aims to enhance specific areas of the student learning experience through encouraging academic and support staff and students collectively to share current good practice and to generate ideas and models for innovation in learning and teaching.”

First Project Groups Meeting

The first meeting of the Steering and Operational Groups of the Project were held as a single joint meeting with representation from all partners at Bangor University, on the 21st February. Following the presentation there was a general discussion and Q+A session which touched on a number of issues raised by Tom's presentation. Some of the challenges that the project faces were discussed, as well as the opportunities that it can provide. The proposed composition of the Steering Group was agreed, and the plan for the project team to make a series of site visits to each partner was also approved.

This is a breakdown of the vision for the Cadarn Learning Portal. HEFCW have approved a total budget of £1.5M to create a web portal that will showcase, promote and facilitate technology enhanced learning across the CADARN group of higher education institutions and support access to bilingual learning. Aberystwyth University is co-ordinating a team to deliver the website and ensure its uptake.
