Educational Media Production Team start work

The Learning Portal project entered a new phase this month with the employment of a team of three media specialists. This team will assist partners' staff in producing educational resources for use in their teaching and to educate and inspire visitors to the portal. They will start by producing some guides to the equipment that has been funded by the project, but then will visit partners to produce materials locally, and to support and train local staff in production skills and techniques.

Using wikis for Student Engagement

What is a wiki? According to the most well-known wiki, Wikipedia, "A wiki is a web application which allows people to add, modify, or delete content in collaboration with others. " (Here, wikipedia is quoting the Encyclopedia Britannica). Some teaching staff at Universities have begun to integrate this editing and reviewing tool into their teaching. The VLE, Blackboard has a component called Campus Pack that allows staff to give students assignments that are based around contributing to a wiki. Here, Psychology Lecturer, Gareth Hall of Aberystwyth University discusses his experience of getting students to engage with reviewing work and creating an online glossary using a wiki.

Brief Guide to Choosing Creative Commons Licenses

The CADARN Learning Portal has produced and published the first of a series of brief guides aimed at helping staff to create OER. The aim has been to distill the main issues so that they can be presented on a single page of A4. They will be published bilingually (Welsh on one side, English on the other). The first takes staff through the decision making process regarding what they wish to allow or disallow in the use of their published material.

Metflix – Cardiff Met Library and IT Video Project

The CADARN Learning Portal Project has agreed to fund resources to create learning objects such as instructional videos. Jamie Finch, of Cardiff Metropolitan University has kindly agreed to provide a guest blog on the experience of creating some videos for instructing students in using facilities at the Cardiff Met Learning Centres. His experience and practical tips might help CADARN partners in their approach to producing videos for the portal.

Learning Portal Launches Flier at HEA ‘Future Directions’ Conference

The CADARN_Learning_Portal Information Flier was launched at the HEA 'Future Directions' Conference last week, as was the new publicity stand and posters. The HEA Wales Future Directions initiative “encompasses the quality enhancement work being carried out in the Welsh HE sector, which aims to enhance specific areas of the student learning experience through encouraging academic and support staff and students collectively to share current good practice and to generate ideas and models for innovation in learning and teaching.”
